Cushions For The Family Patio
Posted by Don / garden and interior design
We hit some garage sales last weekend and bought a great set of wood patio furniture and put it on the deck. The furniture needs a little TLC, but it’s sturdy. The cushions were in pretty rough shape, so those went out with this week’s trash. Now we are shopping for new outdoor patio cushions. We’re finding that there are all kinds to choose from, with lots of styles and fabrics.
The set comes with a couple of chaise lounge chairs. I’ve reserved one of those for me! I want a cushion that is great to look at, maybe in a traditional stripe. I was pushing to get all the cushions from the same group, but we couldn’t agree. So, we’ll have an eclectic mix of cushion colors and styles on the deck. Most of the cushions we’ve looked at promise to resist fading. They are treated with something that keeps UV rays from doing damage. It also rains a lot here, too. We tend to have late afternoon showers that blow through quickly. I love evenings out on the deck, and most brands of outdoor patio cushion are made from materials that will dry quickly and will resist mildew. Most also have tie-down straps, to keep them secure to the furniture.
My kids have claimed the big chairs that came with the set. My daughter wants a polka-dot cushion we saw at the home improvement store. My son wants solid blue. And they love to eat out on the deck. We grill a lot, and have dinner outdoors almost every night we can. Kids are sloppy, so we’ll also choose patio cushions that wash easily and are stain resistant. Most fabrics are also made from durable acrylic fibers, and should hold up well, even if the dogs take a turn on them.
My hubby grabbed the other lounger. He doesn’t care what color cushion he gets. Doesn’t care if it washes easily or holds up well. He’s looking for a comfortable place to nap! To him, Saturdays are for yard work followed by a snooze. The outdoor patio cushions we’ve tested so far, and we’ve probably sat on a hundred of them, have all been really comfortable. The bottom line is that it looks like we’ll be able to make everyone happy with the outdoor patio furniture and soft furnishings we buy. Tomorrow we are heading out to round them all up.
Make sure you and all your family are comfortable outdoors. Take your inside outside!
